R.I.P. Mama Cat

Mama Cat crossed the Bridge Sunday evening. It was a peaceful crossing. We think her poor tired little heart just gave up the struggle and stopped.

Mama had lived with us since Thanksgiving of 2006. We took her in and did all we could to let her know she was loved and safe. Our reward was to see her gradually become a sweet angel of a cat. She was full of purrs, head bonks and kitty kisses.

By the time her 14th birthday rolled around last October, Mama had developed a multitude of health issues. She had high blood pressure, a heart mummer, and mammary cancer. Later she developed hyperthyroidism.

One of her favorite things was to get a drink from the faucet. She would sit on the sink and stare at us until one of us went over and made her a drip.

She was self appointed guardian of the canned food stash. It was her favorite.

Another favorite was her red basket. This is one of my favorite pictures of Mama Cat. It was taken last year just before Christmas.

Mama Cat, you will always be remembered with love and laughter. Stories of your leaping ability and your antics will always be included when we tell others about our family of cats. You will live forever in our hearts until we meet you at the Bridge and cross the Veil together.

With all our love to you, farewell Mama Cat. R.I.P.

Mama Cat Update 5-6-12

Mama Cat had a seizure Thursday evening.

Dr. Kevin said it was probably brought on by her heart failure, not enough oxygen to her brain. We increased the heart medication to twice a day.

There have been no additional seizures, at least none that we’ve witnessed. Her condition is not as good as before the seizure, and in fact seems to be deteriorating.

She has staked a claim to the stove-top as her favorite place to be. I move her when I need to cook, the rest of the time, its hers.

Mama Cat Update

The test results came back for Mama Cat last Monday. They showed that she is severely hyperthyroid. That same day we put her on medication to lower her levels and hopefully get her on the road to recovery.

Mama is not too happy about the increase in the amount of pills she must now take each day. She protests loudly with weapons drawn when “pill time” rolls around. She really hates the nutritional supplement, too. Forcing her to take it( with a syringe) is stressful for us both. In the meantime her appetite for normal food has picked up. She’s eating more and  keeping it down. Maybe we can stop the nutritional supplement soon.

With only a week’s worth of medication in her system, Mama is showing improvement in her behavior too.  There are less signs of weakness and she is more alert.

I admit that I want one of those instant recoveries. I know that it won’t happen that way. She will have to have the medicine adjusted, maybe several times before we get the best results. I’m just impatient.

A Feeling of Dread–Part 2

Mama Cat is sick.

We made an unscheduled visit to Dr. Kevin last Thursday afternoon. Mama Cat had become listless with labored breathing and a rapid heartbeat. She was vomiting often.

We had to wait while Dr. Kevin’s staff worked us in between appointments. It wasn’t a long wait. Soon Dr. Kevin was examining her. She had lost weight, down to 5.5  pounds. Her mammary tumors were no larger than several months ago. Her teeth were good. Her temperature was normal. Her heart was racing.

Mama and I waited while Dr. Kevin ran blood tests.

The results showed some indications of heart failure. Dr. Kevin prescribed a heart medication and a nutritional supplement.  He also decided to test her for hyperactive thyroid.

Mama Cat’s condition has not improved since Thursday. Oh, there are times during the day when she seems better . Then she droops and seems weak and uncomfortable. Her irritability increases each day.

The last test results will be in today. I hope it is the thyroid. We can treat that.

Here is  Mama Cat. . . pictures taken this weekend.

Mama is a very sick kitty. We are praying that Dr. Kevin will have answers and additional treatment options today.

A Feeling of Dread

I’m a little worried about Miss Lisa and Mama Cat. Both are seniors (Lisa almost 16 and Mama 14). Both have health issues: Lisa has intestinal lymphoma and so far is beating the odds on length of life, Mama has high blood pressure and tumors in her mammary glands which are probably cancerous. Both are receiving palliative care for the cancer and Mama takes medication for her blood pressure.

Lisa

For the last week or two, both girls have been acting a bit different. Lisa is a little more withdrawn. Its hard to say definitely, since she has always been shy and a scared of her own shadow. But something is different.

Mama Cat

Mama Cat’s behavior is also a bit different. She is eating like a horse and not gaining any weight. In fact, she may have lost a little. The other changes are as hard to define as Lisa’s, but to me they are there.

Both these girls have beaten the odds many times over. Both are tough little cats with an amazing will to live.

I feel an icy feeling of dread easing around my heart. I am in fear that these precious little ladies may not be with me much longer. I pray I’m wrong.

A Cathouse Thanksgiving

We hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. We did, although we didn’t think so at first. You see, Mommy had stayed up after she got home the night before cooking and making things that were put away instead of being eaten. That was confusing.

Everything seemed normal Thanksgiving morning… Mommy and Daddy got up and had coffee and talked. Just like normal. Then Mommy put all the food and goodies she had made into a box and put it in the car. She and Daddy said they would be back later. . . and they LEFT!!! Both of them! At the same time. We were ALONE!!!

Jay Jay Dog started barking and howling and crying for Mommy and Daddy as soon as the car left the yard. The noise was horrendous! He can sure make a lot of noise for a little dog!

We kitties were mad. . . at being left alone with a howling dog and for being left alone in general. Mommy and Daddy just don’t do that. How could they!!!

We were forewarned. . . they had been talking about going to their granddaughter’s house for Thanksgiving dinner for weeks. We, however, didn’t believe they could actually do such a thing.

At first we discussed our revenge. Thomas T. was planning on throwing up just inside the front door; Maggie was going to pee somewhere inappropriate; Precious promised a hairball on the bed. Yes, we had our plan about worked out.

Then we got to thinking about what Thanksgiving is all about and the things we were thankful for.

Precious said she was thankful Mommy had brought her food and water when she was living under the dumpster and then brought her home as soon as she gained her trust.

IMG_1284

Thomas was thankful Mommy and Daddy had taken him in the  winter he showed up, many years ago now, homeless and lost.

DSCN0563

Smudge was thankful Mommy had taken him in this fall and thankful that she is willing and able to feed him all he can eat whenever he wants it.

IMG_1689

Tigger said he was thankful Mommy had made sure he got his surgeries and always takes him to the vet when he shows the smallest sign of being sick.

DSC01949

Mama Cat was thankful for being taken in and for the love she has received and the medical care. She is glad she gets her medicine every day, not matter how big a fit she throws, cause she feels better when she gets her medicine.

DSC01952

I, Amber, am thankful Mommy knew what to watch for and got me to the vet when my heart started acting up. Maybe I will get to live a bit longer due to her diligence. I want to, I love being alive.

DSC01935

Lisa is thankful she has had a home with Mommy and Daddy for over 15 years. She is glad Mommy got her on life-saving meds in time to.

IMG_1566

Mikey is thankful to be here with Mommy and Daddy. They spoil him and he knows it.

IMG_1562

Maggie Mae is also thankful to be here. Her temperamental “watch this!”pee sessions would not be tolerated by many “regular” people.

IMG_1563

Sugar and Spicy are thankful Mommy took time to pick them up where they had been set out on the roadside to starve. They are thankful that they went from almost crossing the Bridge to having a home with us.

IMG_1568

IMG_1567

Jay Jay Dog stopped howling long enough to say he was thankful to be here too. His illnesses are being treated and as the only dog, he is “King” of the castle.

DSC02004

We told him he was spoiled rotten and it was a cottage, not a castle and he wasn’t king. He started barking and howling again. You can’t have a calm discussion with a dog. . . unless you’re a human.

Mommy and Daddy were gone about all day. They got home before dark, all tired from the trip and sleepy from the good food.

They said they were thankful for their human children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and that they got to spend time with them.

Then they told us that they were thankful that we were all here, waiting to greet them when they opened the door.

That made our wait worth every minute.

Mommy’s Thoughts… 9/8/2011

Life can get interesting when you have 12 pets and a husband.

Of the 11 cats, 4 are senior kitties with health problems to match their age. The lone dog in the mix, also a senior, has developed his own health problems.

The husband, with his own health issues and also a senior, is remarkably patient and understanding of me and the pets. He loves us all.

The 7 younger cats, ranging in age from 5 to 1 year are going through dominance issues with some resulting bad behavior. It can range from screaming at each other to inappropriate urination. The pee-cat has been checked: no bladder infection, just a feline with passive-aggressive tendencies.

The sick kitties…. who you have learned about if you read the blog regularly, are Lisa (intestinal lymphoma), Tigger (chronic collapsing urethra and permanent catheter), Mama Cat (high blood pressure and mammary tumor), Tennyson (weight loss and inflamed gums), and Jay-Dog (low thyroid). All of the above are on daily medications.

Hubby and I also have daily medications. Lucky for me, he in in charge of his. I take mine and administer the pet-meds each day. Believe me, the calendar is full of names and check marks. I have my phone set to remind me to take mine.

To update on the last and upcoming vet visits: Tennyson went for a follow up yesterday and was given a 3 day round of antibiotics. He goes for a check up next week. It will be a two-cat trip, as Mama Cat is going for a check of the tumor, which I think has started to grow and spread down the line.

The prognoses for Mama Cat isn’t good. Her age (14), heart issues and high blood pressure make surgery a scary proposition.

Tennyson’s appetite had improved by late yesterday (I haven’t fed them this morning) and made me feel hopeful that we can get him up to par soon. I hope so. He is a precious kitty.

Speaking of feeding the kitties: they are gathered round me with demanding looks, so I better go open those cans.
