Kitty Rules for the Staff

I’ve heard of cat owner’s referred to as “staff” by cats on other blogs. I’m starting to understand that they do indeed feel that way about us.

When Thomas T. starts his raspy, irritating meowing (God bless him, he has the most annoying meow of any cat I’ve ever seen, uh, heard) I jump to find what’s wrong and fix it so he will hush.

Usually the dry food has been eaten down level with the top of the bowl. This is not satisfactory at all! The Thomas T. rule of dry cat food states: “Dry cat food will be heaped into a cone extending at least 1 inch, but optimally, 2 inches above the rim of the bowl at all times.”

The Lisa cat food rule is simple and does not require measuring heaped dry food. It states: “I am old and sick and will only eat tiny bits of wet cat food, preferably the highest priced the store has and it must we warmed to just the right temperature.”

No problem Lisa, I’ll get right on it.

Sugar and Tennyson have one main focus – canned cat food. Their rule is : “I want it ALL!” Feeding time means I have to also act as referee so the other cats don’t get pushed out of the way by the resident pigs disguised as cats.

Then there is the Maggie Mae litter box rule” “My personal litter box will be cleaned immediately after I use it, or next time I will pee right in front of you on the floor so you know the error of your ways”

Which ties right in with the Mama Cat litter box rule: “I am so afraid of the other cats that I have to stay on the counter and cabinets all the time. You will take me to the litter box and stand guard against attacks because I am afraid.”

OK Mama,  just let me know when you need to go. (She does.)

The Sugar rules for staff include the “You will stop what you are doing and give me your undivided attention whenever I demand it” rule. It applies even when writing this blog. The other cats also have this rule, but Sugar is the most pushy about it.

With eleven cats, the rules are endless and each cat lets us know when we disappoint them in our lack of “getting it” where their rules are concerned.

So, yes, we are “staff” to the kitties. But we love it.

Break Time

Spicy and Sugar know how to relax as only kittens can. Usually a scene like this occurs after a game of “tag and wrestle”.  After all that energy is expended they are ready to settle down and recharge.

Happy Gotcha Day, Precious

Last Sunday, January 9th was my “Gotcha Day”. It marked four years since the snowy evening I decided I did trust the lady who had been bringing me food and fresh water for months. She asked me if I was ready to go home and, after a moment or two, I decided I was. I head butted her hand as she reached to pick me up. It was cold and she wrapped me inside her sweater and took me to her car and put me into a waiting cat carrier.

Once she had taken the rest of the night off work, she drove me to Shady Hollow. I made myself at home right away. I introduced myself to my new Daddy and the resident cats. It sure was nice to be in a warm house. I had been sleeping under a dumpster for over two months while Mommy tried to get me to trust her and come home.

I had been helped by a big black and white feral tom cat who slept with me and kept me warm. When I came into my first heat, he was there. So, when Mommy brought me home, I was pregnant with “Daddy Cat’s” kittens. I was an extremely good mother to my kittens. All five grew up to be bigger than me. They are still here. One, Amber, writes the blog most of the time, and comments on our Facebook page. Another, Amy, died in October from a heart condition. My son, Tigger, has health issues.  Mikey, and Maggie Mae are my other children.

After the kittens were weaned, Mommy got me spayed. No more kittens for me! Well, as long as Mommy doesn’t find anymore. I sort of took charge of Sugar and Spicy when Mommy found them. As the only cat here who had ever had kittens, I knew what they needed.

I’m almost five years old now. Sometimes I dream about being thrown away and the dumpster, but not so often anymore. I know I have a forever home. That makes me very happy.

Two Cats Tuesday–Strange, Part 2

The very next day after yesterdays post pic was taken, I caught the same pose, almost. This time Sugar was under Mikey’s leg. They were sleeping until I got the camera. . .

If I keep a close eye on Sugar, maybe I can catch her sleeping this way with the other cats and have an entire series of photos.

I don’t know how to explain this sleeping arrangement, but it lasted for a long time. Cats: they never cease to amaze me.

Tigger Has To Go See Dr. Kevin

Amber here. I heard Mommy say that Tigger has to go see Dr. Kevin tomorrow. She thinks he has picked up another UTI.

Nikon 013

Tigger does NOT like going to the vet.

He has had bladder problems for nearly 2 years and has a chronic UTI that keeps coming back. Mommy takes him for an antibiotic shot and he gets better. But she keeps a close eye on him and now says he is going to see Dr. Kevin tomorrow, whether he wants to or not. (Mommy can be that way sometimes.)

Mommy accuses Tigger of causing some of the extra gray fur she has grown this past year. I don’t know about that. I think she just wants to blame someone.

Anyway, Tigger has gone for  nearly 3 months without a shot, so he is improving. Maybe he can go that long again.

I do know that my brother Tigger doesn’t feel good. He may not mind going to see Dr. Kevin this time.
